Fructo-oligosaccharide (FOS)
A prebiotic fructo-oligosaccharide (FOS) that is readily water-soluble and heat-stable, used for fibre enrichment and sugar-reduction adjustments in beverages, dairy, bakery and functional foods;Available in 55 and 95 content grades; sweetness and dosage are recommended to be confirmed by trial.
Features
- Readily water-soluble: easy to formulate in beverages and liquid systems
- Heat-stable: suitable for conventional sterilisation, baking and extrusion processes
- Lower sweetness than sucrose: convenient for fine-tuning reduced-sugar recipes
- Synergy with high-intensity sweeteners: helps improve the sweetness profile and reduce aftertaste
- Low viscosity: convenient for high-solids formulas and pumping
- Blends with other oligosaccharides: e.g. with IMO for fibre combinations
- Stable sucrose-type structure: little Maillard browning under high-temperature processing
- Low mono- and disaccharide content: residual glucose, fructose and sucrose are controlled in both grades, suited to low- and no-sugar formulations
- Non-fermentable oligosaccharide: not utilised by yeast and most lactic acid bacteria, so it survives into fermented dairy and beverages

FAQ
Common questions on specification basis, application and commercial terms
Answered product questions
What is fructo-oligosaccharide (FOS)?
A prebiotic fructo-oligosaccharide ingredient in which fructose units are linked by β-2,1 glycosidic bonds, commonly used for fibre enrichment in beverages, dairy and functional foods.
What is the FOS content?
Two content grades are regularly supplied: grade 55 (FOS ≥55% of dry solids) and grade 95 (≥95%), produced to GB/T 23528.2-2021 and adjustable to contract specification; liquid products have dry solids ≥75% and solid products have moisture ≤5%.
How sweet is it?
Less sweet than sucrose; actual performance varies with concentration, temperature and system, and is best confirmed by trial.
Which products is it suited to?
Beverages and tea drinks, dairy and fermented milk, bakery and cereal products, instant powder drinks, functional foods and nutrition bars.
Is there an intake recommendation?
Follow the product formula and applicable regulations. Excessive intake of oligosaccharides may cause bloating or diarrhoea in some people; adjust to individual tolerance.
